Bring your own AI
Use your OpenAI, Anthropic or Google Gemini key.
Without your own key, knowledge checks use our AI model, and a Safe AI connection set to "Our AI" uses our model. With your key, both use your account at your provider.
Add a key
Open Connect your AI, choose OpenAI, Anthropic or Google Gemini, paste the key, optionally set a model name, and press Test connection. The test sends one tiny message with your key and tells you if the provider accepted it.
- OpenAI keys start with
sk-, Anthropic keys withsk-ant-, Google Gemini keys withAIza. - You can keep one key per provider and replace or delete any of them at any time. The first key you save is the default used for knowledge checks.
How your key is protected
- Encrypted with AES-256-GCM using a key that lives only in the server's settings. The database holds ciphertext.
- Never shown again: the dashboard shows only the last 4 characters.
- Never written to logs, never returned by any API response or error message (if a provider echoes it in an error, we remove it), never put in an email.
- Not included in your data export (only provider, model and last 4 characters). Deleted when you delete it, or when you delete your account.
What it is used for
- Knowledge checks. The AI judge step runs on your provider. These are not limited by the knowledge allowance, only by your normal monthly checks (each knowledge check counts as one normal check).
- Safe AI address. A connection set to your provider sends your customers' messages to it with your key. You pay your provider for those calls.
If your provider is down or times out during a Safe AI request, your customer gets your fallback message (HTTP 200), never an error, and the real error is saved in your dashboard history. See Safe AI address.
Tip: create a separate key at your provider just for Nexxtool AI, with a spending limit.
